  • Choose the harp or guitar - everyone learns piano by way of our Music Theory classes. If you want to actually PLAY the piano we suggest the Yamaha P-45 or Weighted Keyboard

If you just want to learn the harp or guitar, just get yourself a basic keyboard.

HARP: Roosebeck 22-String Levered Harp is the best choice for this mentorship.

GUITAR: We love ¾ guitars like Cordoba or Martin because they’re smaller and easy to play, but pop into a guitar shop and choose an acoustic guitar that resonates.  Scarlett uses a classical nylon string Yamaha TransAcoustic guitar, it’s a matter of personal taste, really.

The Benefits

Music as a BIOHACK

Biohacking is the process of making changes to your lifestyle in order to “hack” your body’s biology and feel your best. Incorporating a regular music practice into one’s routine can be considered a form of biohacking, as it deliberately leverages the neurological, psychological, and physical benefits of musical training to optimize human well-being and function. Here are some of our favorite benefits of learning an instrument.

Music for Brain Health

Picking up an instrument later in life isn’t just a fulfilling hobby; it’s a great boost for your brain’s health, particularly the gray matter. Gray matter is the part of the brain that processes information, and learning music actually increases its volume. This means better memory, attention to detail, and problem-solving skills. As you practice, your brain gets a workout, and just like muscles, it builds up strength in the areas controlling movement and hearing. The result? A healthier, more agile brain with improved functions that can protect against age-related decline. So, strumming a guitar or tickling the ivories can be a delightful way to keep your mind in tune.

Music for Mental Health

Embracing music by learning to play an instrument can do wonders for mental health. It’s not just about creating melodies but also about striking a chord with your emotional well-being. Engaging with music can reduce stress, elevate mood, and serve as a conduit for expressing feelings that might be hard to put into words. It encourages mindfulness and provides a sense of accomplishment, all while being a soothing outlet for anxiety and depression. Whether it’s the focused tranquility of playing piano or the vibrant energy of strumming a guitar, music invites a harmonious balance to the mind, offering a peaceful refuge in the rhythm of life. So, learning music is more than a hobby—it’s a powerful tool for nurturing a sound mind.

Music for Body Health

Engaging new muscle groups in our fingers and hands to navigate strings or keys enhances dexterity and strengthens hand muscles, which is particularly beneficial for joint health and fine motor skills. Playing these instruments also encourages deep engagement with the vagus nerve, a critical component of the parasympathetic nervous system. This engagement promotes relaxation and can lead to reduced heart rate and lower blood pressure, encouraging a state of calm throughout the body. As a result, the immune system gets a natural boost, better preparing the body to combat stress and fend off diseases. By learning a new instrument, you’re not just mastering chords and melodies, you’re also orchestrating a healthier body response, making music a truly holistic form of self-care.

Music for Emotional Health

Playing instruments such as the piano, harp, and guitar has measurable benefits for emotional health, rooted in scientific findings. The practice can enhance mood by triggering the release of dopamine, a neurotransmitter linked to pleasure while reducing stress by lowering cortisol levels. Additionally, playing music increases serotonin and oxytocin, which can lead to an improved sense of happiness and social bonding. These activities also encourage mindfulness and can act as a form of emotional therapy, helping to manage symptoms of anxiety and depression and promoting overall mental well-being.

Experience the magic of music as a pathway to your soul.

This program will culminate in 2 LIVE Song Circles in Topanga and Marin by the end of April 2025.
